The Reef Survey

The water that morning was glassy and windless. That flat, unbothered surface belied what was waiting forty feet down.

The colony had always been heterogeneous. Staghorn, brain coral, sea fans, and half a dozen sponge species competed for the same narrow band of light, and that variety was the entire justification for the eleven-year study. But this season the composition had shifted. Four degrees above the ten-year mean for late August is the sort of reading that usually means a failed sensor rather than a failed ecosystem, so Priya swapped the unit, recalibrated the replacement against a reference thermometer, and pulled the same figure a second time. There was nothing wrong with the equipment.

Agricultural runoff from the mainland had already proven detrimental to water clarity along this stretch of coast; the county had been arguing about fertilizer setbacks for six years without passing anything. Now the heat would exacerbate a problem that was already well established, accelerating a bleaching event that a cooler season might have held in check for another year or two.

There was also a bookkeeping problem. A graduate assistant had entered the previous summer's transect coordinates in the wrong order, and Priya had to rectify that error across three hundred rows before any of the new measurements could be compared honestly against the baseline. She spent two evenings on it. Nobody thanks you for the correction, but the entire eleven-year record depends on it.

What stayed with her was not the algae or the temperature. It was the silence. On a healthy reef, a diver hears the constant crackle of snapping shrimp, a sound like frying oil that never stops. On the last dive of the survey, the shelf was nearly quiet, and Priya found that quiet more portentous than any number in the dataset.
