The October 2026 SAT Vocab Survey + Quiz - INT Version 1

Share

With the help of reports from students and Reddit's r/SAT, I've compiled the most common and challenging vocabulary from the October 2026 SAT โ€” pulling from both the US and International administrations. I've put these into a quiz format so students and parents can challenge themselves. Good luck!

The Eleven-Minute Pulse

Kofi Mensah's job at the radio observatory was simple on paper: keep the data flowing. Every night, the facility's twelve dishes recorded more than four terabytes of signals from deep space, and Kofi's software had to process all of it before the next night's observations began.

For months, the pipeline's throughput had been falling. Kofi spent his first week tracing the problem to an old filtering routine that discarded any signal whose strength fell outside a fixed range. The range itself seemed arbitrary; no one could remember who had chosen it or why.

He rewrote the filter so its parameters adjusted automatically to each night's conditions. Then he set out to optimize the rest of the pipeline, cutting duplicate steps that had piled up over fifteen years of patches.

The new system was twice as fast. It was also more sensitive, and on the third night it flagged something strange: a pulse that repeated every 2.4 seconds, then vanished for exactly eleven minutes before returning.

His supervisor, Dr. Ana Ruiz, suspected interference. Cell towers, microwave ovens, even passing aircraft can produce patterns that deviate from natural background noise. Thick concrete walls around the control room were designed to attenuate such signals, but nothing blocked them completely.

For two weeks, the team tested every explanation. They shut down equipment, checked flight records, and asked the local utility whether anything on the grid could regulate power in eleven-minute cycles. Nothing matched.

The answer, when it came, involved an interplay of two causes no one had considered together. The pulse was real: a distant neutron star spinning once every 2.4 seconds. The eleven-minute gaps came from the observatory's own cooling system, which switched on in eleven-minute cycles and briefly drowned out the faint signal.

Ana called it the best kind of anomaly, one that turned out to be two discoveries at once. The old filter, Kofi realized, had been throwing the pulsar away for years. A rule meant to impede noise had been quietly hiding the sky.
